Review of the OnePlus 12 5G: A flagship in every sense

The OnePlus 12 5G went on sale in India lately, with a starting price of Rs 64,999. I received the new OnePlus flagship gadget, which you can read about in-depth in our review if you intend to purchase it soon.

From a distance, the upcoming OnePlus 12 shares many design cues with the OnePlus 11. I think that a lot of things from the previous generation were done well, and you shouldn’t fix what isn’t wrong. I appreciate that this smartphone is blatantly unique.

This smartphone is rather large in an era where devices are becoming thinner and have several design modifications with each new model. I reviewed the matte-finished Flowy Emerald shade variety, which is one that, in my opinion, kind of grows on you. It looks like nothing else in the market, so major points for being iconoclastic and energising the area, but it’s a tad too marble-y, which may not be to everyone’s taste.

The triple back camera arrangement on the OnePlus 12 has been fine-tuned by Hasselblad.  The configuration is much the same as what we’ve seen on the OnePlus Open, their foldable smartphone. On the front, though, the selfie camera has a 32MP sensor instead of a 16MP one. Regarding the camera’s quality, it performed admirably and I didn’t notice any needless processing. Thanks to the Hasselblad relationship, the camera is producing very good images with vibrant colours.

A 50MP primary sensor, a 64MP telephoto camera with a 3x optical zoom, and a 48MP ultra-wide camera comprise the triple rear camera configuration. With this optical lens, you can simply acquire a 6X zoom without cropping. It fares well in terms of video, but the lack of a 0.5X option may come as a disappointment to content makers who prefer to use wide angle lens photographs.

Its display is a 6.82-inch QHD+ LTPO screen with support for Dolby Vision and ProXDR, with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. With this smartphone, you may easily watch content or stream your favourite show. This gadget performs admirably in both indoor and outdoor settings. This is due to the fact that one of the device’s best features is its max brightness of 4,500 nits. Since other companies are copying Apple, I personally enjoy that it has the same curved display at the edges as the iPhone, but OnePlus has its own character.

Now, you need to support this with strong software and good hardware if you’re selling smartphones in India in 2024 and you’ve taken a straightforward approach to cut through the clutter, like I believe OnePlus has done.

The OnePlus 12 has a new feature called Aqua Touch, which is only IP65—one tier below IP68—in terms of water and dust protection. However, the Aqua Touch technology is astounding. Testing it during the rain in Mumbai will be fascinating.

We can confidently state that the technologies seen in the OnePlus Open and, more recently, the OnePlus 12, will greatly simplify your life on OxygenOS.  The OnePlus 12 performs admirably, in my opinion. In addition, it has features that truly make it a flagship, like as support for Dolby Atmos and 3D Spatial Audio.

One thing OxygenOS has to make sure of is that this device’s battery is utilised well and performs admirably in the background. The OnePlus 12 boasts a large 5,400 mAh battery along with 50W wireless charging and compatibility for 100W Super VOOC fast charging. It takes less than 30 minutes to go from 0 to 100. For this handset, OnePlus is offering five years of software upgrades, which is a respectable amount.

The 12GB + 256GB model of the OnePlus 12 costs Rs 64,999, while the 16GB + 512GB storage variant is priced at Rs 69,999.

Conclusion

As previously stated, the OnePlus 12 is a clear example of the brand being really themselves. They’ve not exactly settled, but they’ve also not added any Al features, such as those found in the Samsung Galaxy S24 series. But if you still want flagship performance but can’t afford to buy an expensive Galaxy S24 Ultra variant or iPhone 15 Pro Max, the OnePlus 12 is a good option. It has nice software, a respectable camera, and reliable performance.

The OnePlus 12R, which goes on sale for Rs 39,999, is a good option if you’re on an even tighter budget but still want a good value. The OnePlus 12 is a useful flagship that will be available for purchase in 2024, but with all the new Al features hitting the market, the business may soon need to provide a number of software updates that cover a lot of terrain.
