The conflict in Ukraine, Russia’s BRICS presidency, and PM Modi’s conversation with Putin
Speaking with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi covered both domestic and international topics, including Russia’s BRICS presidency.
“I had a fruitful discussion with President Putin. We talked about all the great things that have happened in our Special & Privileged Strategic Partnership, and we decided to plan out some next steps. The prime minister said on social media site X, “We also had a fruitful exchange of views on several regional and global problems, including Russia’s Presidency of the BRICS.
The two presidents followed up on recent high-level discussions between the two nations by reviewing the status of bilateral cooperation on a number of subjects. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) released a statement saying, “They positively assessed the developments in bilateral relations and agreed to develop a roadmap for future initiatives to further strengthen the India-Russia Special & Privileged Strategic Partnership.”
They also discussed topics of common interest on a regional and worldwide scale. The Prime Minister wished Russia luck as it serves as the BRICS President in 2024 and pledged India’s unwavering support. The PMO statement further stated that the two leaders decided to stay in communication.

However, Kremin stated in a statement that the two presidents “touched upon the situation in Ukraine” and “expressed interest in further intensifying mutually beneficial bilateral ties.”
In the midst of the conflict in Ukraine, India has kept strong relationships with the US and other Western nations while also maintaining good relations with its longtime friend, Russia.
