Silchar : A suspended Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer was detained by the chief minister’s Special Vigilance Cell (SVC) on Thursday in relation to a suspected financial fraud involving the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS), according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

According to authorities, the officer, Sukanya Borah, was taken into custody following five rounds of questioning that started in March of last year.

The 34-year-old Borah was placed under suspension in March of last year due to her purported involvement in alleged irregularities in the execution of MPLAD-funded projects.

Borah filed an appeal for anticipatory bail in connection with the case in May of last year, but it was denied by the Gauhati High Court.

Money from Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan’s MPLAD fund was embezzled in the fraud.

According to authorities, the vigilance cell discovered throughout the inquiry that Borah had approved payment for road works in Barpeta before the job was finished.

The monitoring team also discovered that Borah’s fortune had expanded unusually and that she had purchased homes in Guwahati, Morigaon, Hajo, and North Guwahati, among other places, in the names of her relatives.

In addition to Borah, the special vigilance cell also detained retired Public Works Department engineer Samed Ali and Deputy Conservator of Forests Bhaskar Deka for their suspected involvement in the same MPLAD fraud.

All of the arrested people are being questioned by the special cell, according to officials with knowledge of the situation. According to an official, they were taken into custody because they were not assisting the vigilance cell.
