In Guwahati, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurates 200 electric buses
On January 1, 2024, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated 200 electric buses in Guwahati, marking a significant step towards sustainable transportation.
The program is a component of the Assam State Transport Corporation’s (ASTC) initiatives to phase out outdated diesel-powered buses and reduce carbon emissions. It is anticipated that the introduction of these e-buses would revolutionize local public transportation by offering a greener and cleaner choice.
Assam Transport Minister Parimal Suklabaidya emphasized that the deployment of electric buses is in keeping with the larger goal of lowering pollution and developing green energy in the automotive sector.
The Guwahati Smart City Limited initiative has procured these buses, which will operate on 13 routes around Guwahati, demonstrating the state’s dedication to utilising smart technology for urban development.
The action also helps Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to roll out low-emission cars throughout Indian cities and aligns with the national strategy to tackle air pollution, as laid forth by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. Assam’s debut brings it closer to the aim of lowering the nation’s carbon footprint by joining the ranks of progressive states that are embracing electric transportation.
Just 2435 e-buses were running on Indian highways as of October 30, 2023, despite the country having approved 7090 e-buses under the FAME subsidy program. After adding 400 new electric buses to its fleet, Delhi now has the most e-buses in the country. Assam offers a range of options for electric buses, with costs starting at roughly 825,000 INR for a 20-seater bus and going up to approximately 1,000,000 INR for a 15-seater sightseeing bus with a 225 Ah battery
This historic occasion not only demonstrates Assam’s commitment to enhancing urban infrastructure, but it also marks a major advancement toward India’s aspirational goals for the uptake of electric vehicles and environmental preservation.
