Having taken 24 wickets in just 7 matches, Shami emerged as the World Cup 2023’s top bowler.
“Winning this award is a dream come true; people pass away and this recognition is unattainable.” Before the presentation, Shami had expressed her happiness at being nominated for the prize.
The starting lineup for the first four World Cup 2023 matches did not include Mohammed Shami. After Hardik Pandya sustained a horrific ankle injury against Bangladesh on October 19, Shami was added to the starting XI. After his return, Shami made an immediate impression on the competition for the Indian team, taking five wickets against New Zealand. From then on, the pacer set a record. With 24 wickets in the event, Shami outscored Jasprit Bumrah, a prominent bowler from India.
