UPI Services Were Introduced In France At The Eiffel Tower Following Macron’s Visit To India

Paris: The Indian Embassy in France said on Friday that the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) had its official premiere at the Eiffel Tower. It was described as a component of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “vision of taking UPI global.” At the Republic Day celebration hosted in France, the UPI was formally introduced.

The Indian Embassy in France said on X, “UPI was officially launched during the enormous Republic Day Reception at the renowned Eiffel Tower. putting PM @narendramodi’s statement into practice and the goal of expanding UPI worldwide.”

India’s mobile-based payment system, known as UPI, enables users to make 24-hour payments using a virtual payment address that they have registered. UPI is a system that unifies various banking functions, smooth fund routing, and merchant payments under one roof by enabling several bank accounts into a single mobile application (of any participating bank).

According to a joint statement from India and France, the two countries pledged to fostering a healthy ecosystem and forming partnerships in 2023 to empower their citizens and guarantee their full participation in the digital century. An deal was signed by France’s Lyra Collect and NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) to deploy the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) throughout Europe.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that India and France have decided to adopt the UPI payment method, and that it would start at the famous Eiffel Tower, while on a visit to France in July of last year. According to PM Modi, Indian visitors to France would now be allowed to purchase with rupees.

On July 14, PM Modi made the following statement to the Indian community at La Seine Musicale in Paris: “I am happy that India and France are also working together in direction. Whether it is India’s UPI or other digital platforms, they have brought a huge social transformation in the country.” France and India have agreed to allow UPI use there. After the agreement, I shall depart. But the onus is on you to proceed. Dear friends, it will be made from the Eiffel Tower in the future days, meaning that Indian tourists will now be able to pay at the Eiffel Tower using UPI in Rupees.”

French President Emmanuel Macron was in India recently as the Chief Guest for the Republic Day Parade. Macron visited a tea stand in Jaipur and engaged with Prime Minister Narendra Modi over a cup of tea during his visit. Macron paid for anything there using UPI. Prior to their visit to Hawa Mahal in Jaipur, PM Modi gave Macron an explanation of the UPI digital payment system while they were in a neighborhood store.
